چکیده

Yes. A country’s suitability for EMU entry depends on the intensity of trade with EMU members, and the extent to which its business cycles are correlated with those of other members. But both international trade patterns and international business cycle correlations are endogenous. Theoretically, economic integration has an ambiguous effect on the degree to which business cycles are correlated across countries. Empirically though, countries with closer trade links tend to have more tightly correlated business cycles. It follows that countries are more likely to satisfy the criteria for entry into a currency union after taking steps toward economic integration than before. JEL Classification Numbers: F15, F41

Is an Ounce of Prevention Worth a Pound of Cure? Balancing Ex Ante Security with Ex Post Mitigation

Information security controls can help reduce the probability of a breach, but cannot guarantee that one will not occur. In order to reduce the costs of data breaches, firms are faced with competing alternatives. Investments in ex ante security measures can help prevent a breach, but this is costly and may be inefficient; ex post mitigation efforts can help reduce losses following a breach, but...

Ex post information rents in sequential screening

We study ex post information rents in sequential screening models where the agent receives private ex ante and ex post information. The principal has to pay ex post information rents for preventing the agent to coordinate lies about his ex ante and ex post information. When the agent’s ex ante information is discrete, these rents are positive, whereas they are zero in continuous models. Consequ...

Complexity and Renegotiation: A Foundation for Incomplete Contracts

The paper considers a hold-up model where only one of n future trading opportunities will prove to be efficient, and where ex post renegotiation of the ex ante contract cannot be prevented. As the environment becomes more complex (n→S ), the outcome under any message-contingent long-term contract converges to that of the ‘‘incomplete contracting’’ model where trade is contractible ex post, but ...
